Malta in the field of diplomacy – Embassy in the Hague hosts Tilburg University

12/11/2018

As part of its calendar of activities, the Embassy of Malta in The Hague hosted a session with first-year University of Tilburg law students on 6 November. During the event, Ambassador of the Republic of Malta to the Kingdom of the Netherlands H.E. Ms Marlene Bonniċi and Second Secretary Mr Simon Grech shared their experiences in relation to their experience in the field of diplomacy.

Along with information about Malta and its cultural heritage, mention was made of Malta’s role and continued commitment to the European Union. Equally, importance was given to Malta’s unique position as a bridge between Europe and Northern Africa.

As part of the Q&A session, students asked about the more practical aspects of diplomacy and its role within an increasingly interconnected world. More specifically, these ranged from the art of negotiation to Malta’s own EU membership process to the role of diplomacy in fostering economic and commercial links between countries.

This visit was held as part of the ‘Day to The Hague’ programme, during which students acquaint themselves with the political and international dimensions of The Hague as the diplomatic capital of the Netherlands.

The session in the Hague followed Ambassador Bonniċi’s participation at the  in the so-called Japanese Round Tables event held at the University of Leiden the previous week where members of the diplomatic corps were invited to share their diplomatic experience as well as showcase their country with students.
