His Exellency Ambassador Dr Joseph M. Sammut and Deputy Head of Mission Mr Edward Buttigieg attended the 1st multi-stakeholder workshop organised by Global Water Partnership who are entrusted with the implementation of the ACCISI-GEM project in Ghar el Melh.

The project, which is being co-financed by the Ministry for Foreign & European Affairs and Trade through a grant amounting to €100,000, has the primary objective to help five participating Tunisian farmers in the Ghar el Melh area with adapting to climate change and concurrently adopting the smart irrigation systems to enhance water and electricity sustainability.

In his introductory speech, HE Ambassador Dr Sammut referred to Malta’s long standing good relations between Malta and Tunisia and went further to praise the project and its objectives given the challenges being encountered due to climate change. HE also highlighted the importance of the outcomes vis-à-vis an increase in quantity and higher quality, and a decrease in costs as a direct result of the project implementation.

After the morning workshop, participants made a field visit to three of the five farms identified for this project whereby the organisers gave an overview of the implementation process while also explaining how the use of IT shall help the farmers to increase production at a lower cost while using less water and electricity.
