Ambassador Xuereb’s Official Visit to Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein: Nurturing Future Partnerships

On the 29th August, Ambassador Xuereb was warmly welcomed at Hamburg’s City Hall by Almut Möller, State Councillor and Plenipotentiary of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg to the Federal Government, the European Union, and for Foreign Affairs. They discussed a wide range of issues including post-pandemic recovery strategies and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Additionally, the economic dynamics of both Malta and Germany were explored, with a specific emphasis on shared concerns such as the challenges faced by smaller nations and the pivotal role of renewable energy in securing a sustainable future.
In drawing parallels between Hamburg and Malta, the Ambassador pointed out the common constraint of limited land space for the development of wind farms in both regions. This constraint has prompted Malta to explore offshore alternatives. Furthermore, Ambassador Xuereb informed Ms. Möller about Malta’s recently implemented free transportation system, designed to encourage the public to reduce personal vehicle usage in favour of eco-friendly alternatives. Ms. Möller’s spoke about Hamburg’s efforts to promote sustainability and eco-friendly measures, stressing the need to maintain its competitive edge during the transition.
They also discussed civil liberties, where Ambassador Xuereb showcased Malta’s unwavering commitment and accomplishments in this area. Malta’s steadfast dedication to equality has resulted in a remarkable achievement, that is, for eight consecutive years, it has secured the top spot among 49 European countries in the Rainbow Map Index.
On the economic front, both sides discussed the challenges faced by various industries during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the maritime sector. Ms. Möller highlighted the recent improvements in Hamburg’s port situation, while Ambassador Xuereb underscored the proactive measures taken by the Maltese government to support local businesses and mitigate economic setbacks.
The following day, on the 30th of August, Ambassador Xuereb visited Kiel, the main city of Schleswig-Holstein, where he visited the German Naval Yards. There he had the opportunity to meet Rino Brugge, the Chief Executive Officer, and other senior officials of the company. Ambassador Xuereb received a comprehensive briefing on the shipyard’s ongoing projects and also visited the facilities. This immersive experience provided profound insights into the shipyard’s operations, shedding light on innovative projects aimed at advancing renewable energy capacity by harnessing the power of ocean waves.
The Ambassador took the opportunity to explain the importance of the maritime sector for Malta, not only for commercial purposes, but also to safeguard the country’s security. To this end, Malta was continuously strengthening its naval capacity and equipment to meet the ever-increasing demands.
In the afternoon, Ambassador Xuereb was received by Daniel Günther, the Minister President of Schleswig-Holstein. The discussions were marked by a mutual enthusiasm to cultivate a meaningful partnership across various sectors, with a specific focus on education and renewable energy. Ambassador Xuereb highlighted Malta’s steadfast commitment to providing world-class education to students globally and emphasised the nation’s role as a sought-after hub for language students. The cultural richness and welcoming environment of Malta were recognised as offering immersive experiences that enhance the educational journey.
The Ambassador provided a snapshot on Malta’s increased investment in renewable energy, highlighting government initiatives promoting household solar panels and offshore solutions. The Ambassador underscored Malta’s energy mix and commended Schleswig-Holstein’s achievements in transitioning to renewable energy, suggesting potential avenues for cooperation in this field.
Both parties also explored possibilities for enhanced collaboration in promoting Erasmus exchanges and language exchange programs between universities.
Ambassador Xuereb highlighted Malta’s ambitious plans to strengthen its global presence and enhance diplomatic relations by establishing embassies in new territories. This strategic move not only underscores Malta’s commitment to fostering international cooperation but also aims to facilitate stronger cultural and economic ties with nations previously untapped by its diplomatic efforts.
The Ambassador concluded by emphasising Malta’s unwavering dedication to a more sustainable future, highlighting ongoing initiatives that exemplify the nation’s commitment. Both sides acknowledged Schleswig-Holstein’s commendable strides in renewable energy and explored opportunities for a robust partnership in this field that would be mutually beneficial.
The discussions between the two sides highlighted the shared commitment to a sustainable and collaborative future between Malta and Schleswig-Holstein.
Ambassador Xuereb was accompanied by Mr. Johann Stefan Reith, Honorary Consul with jurisdiction over Hamburg, Schleswig- Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, along with Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Mark Abela.
