Ambassador Ronald Micallef is Malta’s High Commissioner-designate to Ghana, His most recent posting was to Addis Ababa (2021 to 2025) where he served as Malta’s Resident Ambassador to Ethiopia accredited to the African Union, Djibouti and Rwanda.
Ambassador Micallef formulated Malta’s Strategy for Africa (January 2020) which sets out Malta’s vision for a holistic and cross-Ministerial engagement with the African continent through development and trade. He is a frequent guest speaker at high-level fora relating to EU, Malta and Africa relations.
Ambassador Micallef has held various Africa-related management and leadership posts with international and Maltese institutes and agencies. He supported the orientation of Maltese business towards Sub-Saharan Africa through his role as Head of Africa desk at Trade Malta where he organised delegations, trade missions and virtual platforms with Ghana, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Namibia.
Before embarking on a diplomatic career, Ambassador Micallef was a researcher in education at the Institute of Education of the University of London where he specialised on teacher development in Africa. He has also worked in the cultural sector particularly in the development of creative industries. He therefore brings together a career in diplomacy, trade, education and the arts over a thirty-year engagement with the continent of Africa.
Ambassador Micallef is fluent in Maltese, English and Italian. His interests include writing, theatre and visual arts with a passion for Malta-Africa relations as seen through history and culture. He has an abiding passion for the Mediterranean Sea which is where Europe and Africa connect directly through trade and history.
He is the father of three daughters who have grown up and lived in Namibia, Ethiopia, Italy and Malta.
