Consular Services
Passports
New Maltese passports are biometric and issued by the Passport Office in Malta. Hence applicants must submit their application in person at the Mission where their biometric data (photograph, fingerprints and signature) is captured electronically and subsequently transmitted to the Passport Office in Malta for processing.
Please contact the mission to make an appointment to submit an application. Appointments are scheduled during the opening hours of the Consulate.
To apply for a new passport, applicants must personally submit the following to the Maltese mission:

Must Present a valid form of photographic ID. Example: passport, ID card.

Important Notes:
- Parents attending the Embassy should present their passport as well as the other parent’s passport together with the application of the child or minor.
- The photos presented together with the application need to be endorsed (at the back) by the same recommender of section 7 and 8 of the passport application form.
- If you are applying for a new passport due to a change in your surname through marriage please provide your marriage certificate and the birth certificate of your spouse together with your application. If you were married outside Austria or Malta please provide legalised/apostilled copies of the required certificates.
- First time passport applications:
- If you have applied for citizenship through a Maltese Mission, provide us with your certificate or letter of citizenship;
- Present a valid form of identification (eg. passport, Maltese ID card, driving license, etc) when submitting your application form;
- Complete section 8 of the passport application form and present a certified photograph;
- If you have not applied for citizenship through this Mission, present your birth certificate and that of your parents and their marriage together with your certificate of citizenship;*
- If you are applying for a first time passport for your child provide the child’s birth certificate, your certificate of marriage together with your birth certificate and that of your spouse.*
* Certificates to be produced MUST BE ORIGINAL certificates from the Registry of the place where the birth/marriage occurred or was registered. These must be apostilled or legalized if they do not originate in Malta or Locally. Information about Birth/marriage certificates issued by the Public Registry in Malta can be retrieved by the Consulate. Hence, please provide us with the accurate dates and names of ascendants (Civil Status Certificates Form – CEA/27)

Embassies and Consulates of Malta process Schengen short-stay (C) visas for stays of 90 days or less.

Visa application forms must be wholly and legibly completed and signed by the applicant. Please refer to the website of the respective location for additional documentation requirements. The Consulate may ask applicants for any other supporting documents it deems necessary.
Where Malta has no Diplomatic Mission or Consular post, third-country nationals are obliged to apply for a visa at the following EU (European Union) Diplomatic Missions and Consular posts, which issue visas in representation of Malta. Click here for more information.

Applications shall be lodged no more than 6 months, and for seafarers in the performance of their duties no more than 9 months, before the start of the intended visit, and no later than 15 calendar days before the start of the intended visit. Due to seasonal large number of applications, an appointment may not be available for several weeks.
The Embassy will not be liable to loss of travel expenses due to late submission of applications.
Applications shall be decided on within 15 calendar days of the date of the lodging of an application which is admissible. That period may be extended up to a maximum of 45 calendar days in individual cases, notably when further scrutiny of the application is needed.
Biometric data will be collected during the appointment using a quick, discreet, and non-intrusive process that captures a facial image with a digital camera and a fingerprint scan with a digital finger scanner. Your face must be clearly visible for a photograph to be taken.
Some Schengen States require that they be consulted on visa applications submitted to other Schengen States by citizens of certain countries. The consultation process may take up to 7 calendar days. Such consultation is currently required for nationals of countries on this list.
Passports must be valid for at least 3 months after the intended date of departure from Malta and must have at least two blank pages. Only passports that have been issued during the past ten years can be endorsed with a visa. Travel documents (passports) issued more than 10 years prior to the visa application, will not be accepted, and applications based on such travel documents (passports) will be considered inadmissible.

Mere possession of a visa does not confer an automatic right of entry to the Schengen zone. Visa holders are requested to present proof that they fulfil the entry conditions at the external border.

Visa Advice for Foreign Nationals (English)
An appointment is required for the submission of visa applications at the High Commission in Canberra, the Consulate General in Melbourne and the Consulate General in Sydney.

The Visa fee is settled in Australian Dollars by direct deposit and depends on the exchange rate on the date of the appointment. Cheques are not accepted.
Citizenship

Citizenship can be acquired either by Birth, by Registration, by Naturalisation, by Dual/Multiple Citizenship and through Direct Investment. Registration of Life Events
Birth, marriage, divorce and death certificates may be registered through this Mission. Only original and apostilled/legalised certificates can be registered. Applications for registration of documents are processed by the Public Registry in Malta and hence the process can take up to a few weeks. The original certificates are kept by the Public Registry in Malta and will not be returned.
