Melbourne is home to the largest Maltese community in Australia. According to the last census in Australia, conducted in 2021, the number of Malta-born people residing in Australia is 35,413. Of these, 16,844 reside in the State of Victoria. Furthermore, in the same census, over 80,000 census participants living in Victoria identified their ancestry as Maltese. One must also mention that in Melbourne there is also a considerable number of Maltese who were born in Egypt and Libya.

The Consulate General in Melbourne provides a wide range of consular services, including the vetting of passport, citizenship and Schengen visa applications, the capture of biometric data for passports and visas, registration of birth, marriage and death certificates, authentication of documents, legalization, and administration of oaths/affidavits. It also assists pensioners who receive a Maltese pension under the Social Security Reciprocal Agreement between Malta and Australia.

The Consulate also aims to promote Maltese culture through various events and projects such as community and school outreach programmes. The Consulate also keeps in contact with the numerous Maltese associations in Melbourne and the local Maltese ethnic media.
