Marco Micallef is Ambassador-designate of the Republic of Malta to the United States of America.

Previously, Advisor to Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Dr Ian Borg, at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism.

Served as Head of Minister’s secretariat for over four years; first at the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects and then at the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade.

As Head of the Minister’s secretariat at the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, Mr Micallef fulfilled a central political and coordinating role during Malta’s tenure as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (2023-2024) and Malta’s 2024 Chairmanship of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. During this period, his work was also crucial in ensuring Malta’s success in hosting the meeting between the then-United States of America National Security Advisor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China. Mr Micallef also served as the Ministry’s organisational and political point of contact when Malta hosted the third meeting of national security and foreign policy advisors to discuss the main principles of Ukraine’s Peace formula initiative.

His vast work experience in a political office also includes a period as Private Secretary to the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, as well as Secretariat Coordinator at the Parliamentary Secretariat for the EU Presidency 2017 and EU Funds.

Additionally, he spent three years in Brussels working at the Permanent Representation of Malta to the European Union as Deputy Mertens. During this work experience, as part of Malta’s preparations for the first Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Mr Micallef spent six months at the Secretariat General of the European Commission. Marco’s first job experience was as an Accounts educator at St Augustine College in Pietà, Malta.

Graduated from the University of Malta with an Executive Master’s in Business Administration, a Post Graduate Certificate in Business Education and a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Banking and Finance.

In 2024, Marco Micallef was given the title of Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy for facilitating various successful political, technical and diplomatic engagements between the two countries.
