Dr Godfrey C. Xuereb presented his credentials to President Biden in April 2023 to become the 14th Maltese Ambassador for the United States of America. He is currently also non-resident Ambassador for Mexico and High Commissioner for The Bahamas. Prior to his appointment he spent twenty-two years working for the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) having held several senior positions in different countries. During his tenure with WHO/PAHO he became the first Maltese citizen to be appointed to the position of Head of Country Office within the organization. He is specialized in public health with a focus on nutrition and physical activity and more recently public health diplomacy. He has experiences in Small Island Developing States, having worked closely with both the Caribbean and Pacific islands as well as in his native Malta, with special emphasis on public health and disease prevention. Before joining WHO, Dr Xuereb served in different posts within the Maltese health system, with his final appointment being that of a/Director of Health Promotion and International Health within the Ministry of Health.

Dr Xuereb has a PhD in Public Health and is specialized in Global Health Diplomacy, having gained his university education at the University of Malta, University of London (Kings College) UK and the University of the West Indies (Mona). During his professional career he has presented at several international scientific fora and is the main author of a number of publications in peer reviewed journals as well as publications for patient education and continuing professional development for health care professionals. He has served as Vice-President and Secretary of the European Diabetes Education Study Group and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health (UK). 

Dr Xuereb is married to Kay, who has a PhD in Education and works as a social researcher mainly in the context of small island states. They have one adult son.
