Mr Bernard Hamilton is Malta’s Ambassador-Designate to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

He joined the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1994 as First Secretary within the Bilateral Relations Directorate. He has since served in a number of senior positions at Head Office, including Head of the Europe, Bilateral Relations Directorate; Acting Director of the Bilateral Relations Directorate and Head of the Development Unit; Head of the Commonwealth, Development and Immigration Unit; and Head of the Commercial Diplomacy Unit.

His overseas diplomatic postings have included Deputy Head of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at the Embassy of Malta in Madrid; Deputy High Commissioner at the High Commission of Malta in London; Deputy Permanent Representative at Malta’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York; Deputy Head of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at the Embassy of Malta in Beijing; Deputy Permanent Representative at Malta’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva; and Consul General of Malta in Shanghai.

Mr Hamilton holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from the University of Malta and a Master’s degree in Diplomacy from the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies.

He is fluent in Maltese, English and Spanish, and has working knowledge of French and Italian. He is married to Vanessa, and they have two children, Zach and Zoe.
