The Embassy of Malta in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia

General overview of the work undertaken by the Mission Diplomatic relations with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia were established on 30 November 1982.

The Embassy of the Republic of Malta to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the Republic of Djibouti and the African Union, and the High Commission of the Republic of Malta to Republic of Rwanda serves as a multifaceted nexus for fostering collaboration and progress through a diverse array of initiatives. Central to its mission is the cultivation of strong diplomatic relations between countries, characterized by trust, cooperation, and mutual respect. Through cultural exchanges, diplomatic engagements, and people-to-people connections, the Embassy nurtures enduring bonds that transcend borders, fostering a climate of collaboration and solidarity among nations.

Recognizing the pivotal role of trade as a catalyst for economic growth, the Embassy advocates for mutually beneficial partnerships and facilitating agreements that unlock new opportunities for Maltese entrepreneurs. The Embassy seeks to provide regular support to Maltese entrepreneurs who are either already present or looking into doing business in Ethiopia, Rwanda and Djibouti. The importance of such countries in East Africa is also becoming increasingly evident. They provide ample opportunities for Maltese industries seeking to venture into sectors such as: ICT solutions, capacity building and technical cooperation, renewable energy, maritime, tourism, and health.

The Embassy also undertakes projects funded through Official Development Assistance from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism of the Republic of Malta. These projects are meticulously designed to address pressing needs, with a particular focus on education, while ensuring a tangible and lasting impact on local communities. One such project, ‘Connecting Classrooms’ saw Ethiopian classrooms connected with Maltese classrooms in order to discuss various topics, such as culture and ethics.

In tandem with development efforts, the Embassy prioritizes capacity building in critical domains. This is exemplified through the recent high-level training provided to over 50 Ethiopian diplomats on cyber diplomacy. Through a specialized training program, local stakeholders were empowered with the skills and expertise necessary to navigate the evolving digital landscape, fortify cybersecurity measures, and harness the transformative potential of technology for societal progress.

In essence, the Embassy’s activities epitomize a holistic approach to international relations, grounded in principles of partnership, mutual benefit, and shared prosperity. By leveraging its resources, expertise, and diplomatic acumen, it strives to create a more interconnected, resilient, and prosperous relation between Malta and Ethiopia, Rwanda, Djibouti and the African Union.
