Embassy of Malta in the Kingdom of Belgium

Malta’s diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Belgium were established on 11 June 1965 and characterized by cooperation on both a bilateral and multilateral level. The Mission is Malta’s Embassy to Belgium and Luxembourg and the Representation of Malta to NATO. The Mission provides consular services to Maltese nationals living in, or visiting, Belgium and Luxembourg. It also regularly organises cultural and social events for the Maltese diaspora, with a particular emphasis on the promotion of the Maltese language amongst children and youngsters. The Embassy has opened a library of books for children in Maltese at Dar Malta (with around 1,000 books thus far) and organises reading sessions and other events to encourage young people to read more in Maltese and increase their appreciation of the Maltese language.

As Malta’s Permanent Representation to NATO the Mission represents Malta in all NATO fora in which Malta participates in the framework of the Partnership for Peace, liaises with the International Staff at NATO Headquarters whenever necessary, and actively contributes to the drafting and the monitoring of the implementation of the bilateral programme between Malta and NATO (the Individually Tailored Partnership Programme (ITPP)). The Mission also represents Malta within NATO’s Western European Partners grouping, which brings together Malta, Ireland, Austria and Switzerland.

The Mission works closely with Head Office and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) on specific initiatives to assist Small Island Developing States (SIDS), primarily through Malta’s ‘Island for Islands’ initiative. As a result of this collaboration, Malta is supporting the work of OACPS on the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index, amongst other initiatives.

Since the Ambassador is Malta’s representative on the Administrative Board of the College of Europe, the Embassy also works closely with the College, attending Administrative Board meetings and exploring potential collaboration between the College and Maltese entities.
