Malta and Palestine formally established diplomatic relations on 22 September 2025.
The Representative Office of Malta in Palestine, established in June 2009, embodies the traditional ties of friendship between Malta and Palestine and our two peoples. Apart from the enhancement of relations between Malta and Palestine in the political and economic spheres, the Representative Office encourages support and cooperation between the Maltese and Palestinian people, not least in the cultural domain.
The aim of the Representative Office is also to assist in the monitoring of the constantly changing political situation and on developments regarding the Middle East Peace Process. The ultimate goal of the Peace Process is to achieve an independent, democratic, contiguous, sovereign and viable State of Palestine living side by side with the State of Israel, in peace, security and mutual recognition.
Bilateral diplomacy and active support within the European Union, the United Nations and other relevant regional and international organizations are means to accomplish this goal.
Together with political engagement with the Palestinian Authority, the Representative Office also engages in initiative to promote Malta in the fields of Trade, Education, Culture and Tourism. It also offers Consular assistance to Maltese citizens living in or visiting the Palestinian territories for tourism purposes, business purposes, or other reasons. As part of its Consular mission, the Representative Office closely follows the security situation across Palestine and cooperates with the Directorate for Consular Services to regularly update the Travel Advice issued by the Maltese Foreign Office. The Representative Office is also in charge of processing Schengen Visa Applications.
One of the yearly initiatives that the Representative Office of Malta in Palestine undertakes is its cooperation with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism of Malta and the University of Malta in offering a number of Palestinian students with the opportunity to study in Malta on a Scholarship.
