Madrid, 17^th May 2020. On the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, marked on May 17, the Embassy of the Republic of Malta in Spain reaffirms Malta’s firm commitment towards the reaffirmation of the dignity and human rights of all individuals without discrimination.
With most parts of the world confined because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the suffering caused by homophobia, transphobia and biphobia is more pronounced than ever. LGBTI persons remain far more vulnerable to violence, unemployment, poverty and homelessness than other sectors of society. Malta recognises the difficulties being faced across the globe, in particular by the trans collectivity as well as by migrant LGBTI persons because of the COVID-19 situation, difficulties that extend to access to basic necessities such as food and housing. The risk of exclusion faced by these persons has become even greater as a result of the negative economic impact of COVID-19.
As nations across the globe ‘break the silence’ to celebrate sexual and gender diversities, we undertake to ensure that our response addresses the basic needs that guarantee the dignity and human rights of LGBTI persons.​
