Speaker Carmelo Abela Attends Summit of Speakers and Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean in Cairo
08/07/2026
Hon. Carmelo Abela, Speaker of Malta’s House of Representatives, took part in the 10th Summit of Speakers and the 19th Plenary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, held in Cairo from 3 to 5 July 2026.
The event brought together Speakers of Parliament and Members of Parliament from across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East to discuss common challenges facing the Mediterranean region.
As the current President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, Egypt hosted this year’s meetings, building on its active role in promoting dialogue and cooperation across the Mediterranean region.
The meetings provide an important opportunity for representatives from across the Mediterranean to speak directly with one another on issues that affect the daily lives of their constituents — including peace and stability, migration, technology, employment, climate change, energy, and opportunities for young people.
Malta’s participation reflects its continued commitment to dialogue, cooperation and stronger partnerships across the Mediterranean.
Throughout their visit, the delegation was accompanied by HE Andre Spiteri, Malta’s Ambassador to Cairo.
