On 2 February 2026, High Commissioner Clifford Borg-Marks presented his Letters of Credence to H.E. The Right Honourable Dame Cindy Kiro GNZM, QSO, Governor General and Commander in Chief in and over the Realm of New Zealand, during a ceremony held at Government House in Auckland.
The ceremony incorporated elements of Māori tradition, reflecting New Zealand’s rich cultural heritage and lending particular depth and meaning to the occasion.
During his stay in Auckland, the High Commissioner undertook an extensive programme of engagements, including bilateral meetings with senior government representatives and trade-related discussions with private sector stakeholders. These meetings focused on strengthening existing cooperation, identifying new areas of collaboration, and advancing economic, commercial, and institutional links between the two countries.
A number of discussions were also held with a view to promoting Malta as a destination for international film and television productions. These exchanges highlighted Malta’s established film industry, experienced workforce, and competitive incentive framework, as well as opportunities for collaboration with New Zealand-based production companies and creative professionals.
The High Commissioner also met with members of the Maltese community in Auckland. This was a warm and positive occasion, providing an opportunity to exchange stories, strengthen personal connections, and engage directly with the community. The High Commissioner reaffirmed the High Commission’s commitment to continuing to prioritise high quality and responsive consular services to Maltese citizens in New Zealand.
The High Commissioner indicated that New Zealand will remain a key focus of his diplomatic engagement. Particular attention will be placed on further advancing the already excellent bilateral relationship, while actively pursuing opportunities to boost trade, commerce, investment, and people-to-people links for the mutual benefit of both countries.
Malta and New Zealand enjoy warm and constructive relations founded on shared values, strong community ties, and a common commitment to international cooperation. The High Commission looks forward to continued close engagement with New Zealand partners in the years ahead. The High Commissioner was ably assisted during his visit to New Zealand by the Honorary Consul for Malta in Wellington, Professor Carmen Dalli PhD, and Deputy High Commissioner Mark Anthony Abela.
