On Tuesday 6^th June, 2023, the Ambassador of Malta to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Her Excellency Mrs Philomena Meli presented her Letters of credence to the President of Algeria Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The credentials ceremony took place in the President’s Palace in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, and the Director of Cabinet at the Presidency of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ennadir Larbaoui. Mrs Meli was accompanied by Consul General Resident in Algeria Mr Duncan Psaila. Mrs Meli had presented her Copies d’Usage to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, Mr. Ramtane Lamamra way back in January 2016.

After the ceremony, a private meeting took place between Ambassador Meli and Minister Attaf and Mr Larbaoui where Mrs Meli highlighted the close historical and political ties between the two countries. She underlined the fact that as regards foreign policy, Malta greatly values the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.   She then referred to the fact that economic relations between the two countries were still below their potential. The Ambassador highlighted various sectors which could be further developed and cited amongst others higher education, pharmaceuticals, maritime, aquaculture and energy.

This meeting was followed by a Press conference.   Mrs. Meli underlined, in the statement to the press, that Algeria and her country ” shared the same aspirations and the same commitment to make the Mediterranean region an area of ​​peace and prosperity”. She stressed the depth of relations between Algeria and Malta and the cultural and linguistic similarities between the two countries given their geographical proximity in the Mediterranean basin.

After recalling that her country had been elected as a member of the Security Council for a two-year term 2023-2024, Mrs. Meli expressed Malta’s desire to work together with Algeria within the United Nations given that Algeria was recently elected as a Non-Permanent member of the Security Council for the period 2024-2025.

On the commercial level, the Ambassador considered that Algeria and Malta were “reliable partners” and noted the many areas of cooperation still to be exploited for the mutual benefit of both countries.The following YouTube link provides the main highlights of the Presentation of Letters of Credence of H.E.
