27/11/2023
On 6 November 2023, the Permanent Representative of Malta to the Council of Europe, Ambassador Francesca Camilleri Vettiger, signed the agreement on a voluntary contribution by the Government of Malta, amounting to a total of €50,000, to support the Council of Europe Neighbourhood Partnership with Morocco 2022-2025, the Council of Europe Neighbourhood Partnership with Tunisia 2022-2025, and the European Centre for Global Interdependence and Solidarity of the Council of Europe, more commonly known as the North-South Centre which currently Malta has the privilege of chairing its Executive Committee.
The North-South Centre is an Enlarged Partial Agreement of the Council of Europe aiming to strengthen the promotion of dialogue between North and South, foster solidarity and raise awareness of global interdependence. It has developed valuable expertise on the empowerment of civil society, youth and women, and today relies on solid networks in Europe and the southern Mediterranean. The sum of €20,000 was contributed to support the work of the North-South Centre to strengthen the ownership of the Centre among its member states as well as its visibility among potential member states.
The Council of Europe Policy towards neighbouring regions aims primarily at extending cooperation beyond the continent and at developing a common legal space based on Council of Europe values and instruments in order to promote the stability and democratic security of both Europe and its neighbouring regions. The sum of €30,000 was contributed to the Neighbourhood Partnerships with Morocco and Tunisia to further support these respective countries in the Southern Neighbourhood in the process of democratic transition by providing assistance in tackling the challenges in the area of democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
