The Malta High Commission in Canberra is pleased to announce that H.E. Mr. Clifford Borg Marks has officially assumed his duties as High Commissioner of the Republic of Malta to the Commonwealth of Australia. On 15 October 2025, Mr. Borg-Marks, accompanied by his spouse Ms Fan Jin and Deputy High Commissioner Mark Anthony Abela, presented his Letters of Credence to H.E. the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia, during a formal ceremony at Government House in Canberra. The Governor-General wished the High Commissioner success in his new post and spoke highly of the close links between Australia and Malta and of the contributions of the Maltese community to Australian society.
High Commissioner Borg-Marks’s appointment reflects Malta’s unwavering commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and fostering closer cooperation across a wide range of sectors. Malta and Australia enjoy a forward-looking partnership that continues to evolve in response to global developments. The two countries share a strong commitment to democratic principles, the rule of law, sustainable growth and international cooperation. The High Commission will work towards the translation of these shared values into practical cooperation that strengthens dialogue, deepens institutional and community links, and delivers outcomes that keep the relationship dynamic and relevant.
Looking ahead, the High Commissioner plans to focus on advancing Malta’s strategic objectives in Australia, including expanding trade and investment opportunities, promoting tourism and educational partnerships, and encouraging collaboration in research and innovation, digital transformation and sustainability. Cultural diplomacy will also remain a key pillar, with initiatives aimed at celebrating Malta’s rich heritage while fostering people-to-people exchanges. The High Commissioner is also committed to the maintenance of close links with the Maltese diaspora and the provision of efficient consular services to the Maltese community.
In addition to these priorities, Malta and Australia will continue to work together on matters of mutual interest and shared global concerns, reinforcing their partnership through constructive dialogue and close cooperation at the bilateral and multilateral levels. These efforts underscore the importance of a strong Malta – Australia partnership in contributing to regional and international stability.
These and other issues were also discussed during separate meetings held on 14 October 2025 at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade with Chief of Protocol Mr. Jonathan Muir and Mr. Jamie Isbister, Acting Deputy Secretary, Development, Multilateral and Europe Group to whom the High Commissioner presented official copies of his Letters of Credence.
The Malta High Commission warmly welcomes High Commissioner Borg-Marks and his family to Australia.
