On 31 January, H.E. Marlene Bonnici formally presented her Letters of Credence to the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, at Bellevue Palace in Berlin. This marks the official commencement of Ambassador Bonnici’s tenure as Malta’s highest diplomatic representative in Germany.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Bonnici conveyed the warm regards of the Government and people of Malta to President Steinmeier, reaffirming Malta’s commitment to further strengthening the long-standing and amicable relations between the two nations – this year being the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Discussions also touched upon shared priorities, including economic cooperation, European affairs, and global challenges requiring collective action.

With a distinguished career in public service and diplomacy, Ambassador Bonnici brings extensive experience to this new role. She is dedicated to building upon the already strong Malta-Germany partnership, fostering deeper engagement across multiple sectors, including trade, investment, culture, and education.

Ambassador Bonnici also underlined her commitment to engaging with the Maltese community in Germany, recognising the important role it plays in further enriching the ties between the two countries. She looks forward to working closely with Maltese nationals, businesses, and organisations to support their initiatives and strengthen the sense of community abroad.

The Republic of Malta and the Federal Republic of Germany enjoy excellent diplomatic relations, grounded in shared European values, active multilateral cooperation, and strong people-to-people connections.
