H.E. Mr. André Spiteri, Ambassador of the Republic of Malta to Japan, along with Mr. Kurisu, Honorary Consul, undertook an official visit to the Kure Naval Base of the Maritime Self-Defense Force of Japan on August 7th 2023. The Ambassador was warmly received by Vice Admiral Ito, representing the Maritime Self-Defense Force Headquarters Kure District, and Chief of Staff Kida, at the headquarters characterized by its distinctive Meiji era brick historical architecture.

During the insightful presentation, a comprehensive overview was provided, encompassing the historical evolution of Kure, the Imperial Navy, the Maritime Self-Defense Force, as well as Malta’s significant role within the Imperial Navy during World War I, and its present-day status.

Ambassador Spiteri notably emphasized the upcoming milestone of the 60th anniversary in 2025, commemorating the enduring diplomatic relations between Malta and Japan. Notably, reference was made to the Maritime Self-Defense Force fleet’s prior visits to Malta in 1991, 2005 and 2016.

A tour of the Maritime Self-Defense Force Fleet ensued, set against the picturesque backdrop of Kure Bay, aboard a vessel under the command of a senior officer. A highlight of their visit included the warm reception extended by Captain Aizawa and his crew aboard the destroyer Inazuma, followed by a comprehensive tour of the vessel itself.

A convivial luncheon was hosted aboard the Inazuma, featuring delectable cuisine prepared onboard, setting the stage for friendly exchanges and engaging conversations. Both Vice Admiral Ito and Ambassador Spiteri reaffirmed their shared commitment to future interactions, marking the positive conclusion of this significant visit.
