Washington, D.C. — On Thursday, November 6 at 6 p.m., the Embassy of Malta to the United States hosted the Malta Day Concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, featuring the renowned ensemble Kantera. The concert commemorated 61 years of diplomatic relations between Malta and the United States and offered audiences a vibrant celebration of Maltese musical heritage.

The performance presented a captivating blend of traditional, folkloristic, and contemporary Maltese music, resonating deeply with both members of the Maltese diaspora in the U.S. and music enthusiasts alike. An audience of over 150 guests enjoyed a richly diverse programme that showcased the ensemble’s extraordinary artistry and versatility.

A highlight of the evening was the historic debut of the żafżafa — a traditional Maltese friction instrument — performed for the first time ever at the Kennedy Center, symbolizing the uniqueness and cultural depth of Malta’s musical traditions.

Kantera’s lively and engaging stage presence delighted attendees throughout the evening, inviting participation from the audience as some were encouraged to dance and even join in playing the tambourine and żafżafa. The concert concluded with resounding applause and a standing ovation, marking yet another memorable evening at one of the nation’s most prestigious cultural venues.

It was truly a night to remember — a celebration of Malta’s rich artistic heritage and enduring friendship with the United States.
