Stephen Montefort

Prof. Stephen Montefort was born in Malta on the 13th January 1960. He arrived in the UK on the 13th January 2025 and presented his working papers to Vice-Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps and Director of Protocol at Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Victoria Busby OBE, on the 14th January 2025.

He has been a medical Doctor for the last 40 years; a Respiratory Consultant Physician for 25 years and Lead Respiratory Consultant Physician for the last 12 years.  He is a Fellow of the three Royal Colleges of Physicians (UK) and of the European Federation of Internal Medicine and American College of Chest Physicians.

Prof. Montefort is a Full Professor of Medicine and since 2012 has been the Academic Head of Department of Medicine at the University of Malta and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the same university.  He was awarded a Chevening Scholarship in 1987 to pursue his studies in Advanced Medicine at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School at Hammersmith Hospital London, and then awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship in 1990 to read for a PhD (in Immuno-pharmacology of allergic airway diseases) from the University of Southampton. He returned to practice medicine in Malta in 1993 after being awarded his PhD.

Prof. Montefort has published extensively in peer reviewed medical journals and is himself a peer reviewer of various scientific and medical academic journals. He is one of the most cited scholars at the University of Malta. He was a member of the Malta Council of Health, Malta Medical Council and of the Occupational Health & Safety Authority board in Malta. During the Covid 19 pandemic, apart from being actively involved in patient care, he was one of the medical advisers to the Prime Minister and the Minister for Health of Malta.

Since 2015 he has been the Malta Federation Lead for the Royal Colleges of Physicians and has established Malta as an international examination hub for the Clinical exams of these UK colleges.

In 2020, Prof. Montefort became a Member of the National Order of Merit of Malta, for medical services rendered and for his research in the field of Respiratory Medicine.

H.E Prof. Stephen Montefort is married to Anna and has two daughters and two grandchildren – all of whom live in the UK.
