Mr. Mario Buttigieg has a career spanning over 40 years in the public service, where he has held diverse roles across various ministries, leading administrative and financial units with consistent dedication.
In 2011, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he gained valuable experience in both the Protocol Directorate and the Consular Services Directorate.
Prior to his current role in Toronto, Mr. Buttigieg served as Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Malta in Lisbon from January 2019 to February 2025. During his tour of duty in Lisbon, he also assumed the role of Charge d’Affaires for several months.
Mr. Buttigieg is fluent in Maltese, English, and Italian, with a working knowledge of Portuguese. His academic pursuits have also provided him with a foundation in Latin and Spanish.
In his free time, Mr. Buttigieg enjoys travelling, reading, attending cultural events, and practicing sports.
He was born on March 8, 1961 and is married to Simone Vella.
