The Republic of Malta and Canada formally established diplomatic relations on 21 December 1964. Relations between Malta and Canada have consistently enjoyed excellent and friendly relations marked by mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared commitment to fostering dynamic ties across various sectors.
Our partnership is based on shared values particularly those upholding human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. The two countries share a strong commitment to safeguarding and strengthening the multilateral, rules-based international order.
Throughout the years, Malta and Canada have cooperated closely within various multilateral organisations such as the United Nations and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). Our shared membership in the Commonwealth highlights a common history and further strengthens our bond. Malta’s accession to the European Union during 2004 has opened new avenues for cooperation at all levels.
The Maltese community in Canada, the second largest outside Malta, has played a significant role in enhancing cultural and social ties between the two nations. This community has fostered synergies and people-to-people exchanges well before Malta’s independence in 1964.
In 2024, Malta and Canada celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations. This milestone was marked by the setting up of a High Commission in Ottawa and the appointment of Malta’s first resident High Commissioner to Canada. This landmark development reflects Malta’s dedication to deepening its relationship with Canada and exploring new opportunities for collaboration on both bilateral and multilateral fronts.
