Embassy of Malta in the State of Libya

Libya was among the first countries where Malta opened its Embassy following independence, with the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries on 11 June 1965. Diplomatic relations were along the years very strong with the exchanges of high level visits between the two countries and signing of more than 50 bilateral agreements. The strong diplomatic relations were also reflected in economic ties, with considerable mutual investment as well a sizeable presence of Maltese nationals and companies working in Libya. Following the closure of the Embassy in 2014 due to the security situation, the Maltese Embassy was the first to reopen its doors in Tripoli in March 2021 and is now fully operational.

The Embassy’s main purpose is to enhance the bilateral relations with Libya through the promotion of trade and investment, facilitate high level visits between the two countries, support cooperation on border management and law enforcement and identify new opportunities for the advancement of the diplomatic relations. The Embassy provides all consular services, including passport renewals, citizenship requests, authentication of documents, legalization, registration of marriage and birth and administration of oaths/affidavits. The Embassy also provides visa services for all purpose of travel through the Visa Applications Centres operated by VFS in Tripoli and Benghazi.
