Embassy of Malta in the Italian Republic

Bilateral relations between Malta and Italy were established on 21 September 1964. These relations between the two countries have always been strong and have continued to flourish over the years, drawing on centuries-old historical, cultural, and linguistic links. As representatives of Malta in Italy, the Embassy in Rome undertakes a wide array of responsibilities aimed at advancing our country’s interests, facilitating international cooperation, and providing assistance to our citizens. Our work can broadly be categorised into three main areas: bilateral, multilateral, and consular affairs. Each of these areas plays a crucial role in shaping our country’s relations with the host nation, Italy and the international community at large. Through diplomatic engagement, participation in international fora (FAO, WFP and IFAD), and consular services, we strive to uphold our Nation’s values, promote mutual understanding, and ensure the well-being of the Maltese diaspora in Italy.

The bilateral aspect is about actively cultivating and strengthening the ties between Malta and Italy. It encompasses everything from conducting diplomatic negotiations to fostering robust political dialogues and promoting vibrant economic and cultural exchanges. Our Embassy staff are constantly engaged in multiple activities, from regular meetings with Government officials to organising impactful diplomatic events. Through these efforts, we facilitate dynamic exchanges across diverse fields, nurturing a relationship that benefits both countries.

The multilateral work involves representing Malta in various United Nations agencies based in Rome and where countries from across the world come together to address global issues. Embassy staff participate in multilateral meetings, conferences, and negotiations to contribute to the shaping of international policies and agreements. This work often involves collaborating with other countries to address shared challenges such as food security and humanitarian aid.

Consular work encompasses providing assistance and services to Maltese nationals who are living or travelling to Italy. This includes passports, and other travel documents, assisting citizens in emergencies or crises, and providing information on local laws and regulations. Consular staff also handle matters such as births, deaths, marriages, and legal issues involving our citizens in Italy. Additionally, the consular offices provide support to nationals of other countries seeking entry visas or consular services for their travel or stay in Malta.

The Embassy in Rome is also accredited to the Republic of San Marino and facilitates communication with countries that are accredited to Malta through Rome.
