The Embassy of Malta in Riyadh is Malta’s resident diplomatic mission to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and is also concurrently accredited to the Kingdom of Bahrain and to the Republic of Yemen.
Malta and Saudi Arabia established diplomatic relations on 1 September 1975. Since then, the two countries have built a friendly and constructive bilateral relationship, underpinned by a framework of agreements covering trade and investment, taxation, maritime transport, and scientific and educational cooperation. High-level exchanges have been a regular feature of the relationship, reflecting the mutual interest of both countries in sustaining and developing their ties.
The Embassy represents the Government of Malta and advances Malta’s foreign policy interests in the Kingdom. This encompasses a broad range of diplomatic functions, from conducting political dialogue with Saudi authorities to reporting on and analysing political, economic, and regional developments of relevance to Malta and the EU. The Embassy also serves as the primary point of contact for matters of bilateral concern and works to ensure that the relationship between the two countries remains active and productive.
Trade and economic promotion form an important part of the Embassy’s work. The Embassy supports efforts to develop commercial and investment links between Malta and Saudi Arabia, working alongside Maltese and local stakeholders to identify opportunities and facilitate engagement between the two business communities. The Malta-Saudi Arabia Joint Economic Commission provides a formal framework for this work, bringing together representatives of both governments to advance bilateral economic cooperation.
The Embassy is equally active in the fields of culture and education. It promotes Malta’s cultural heritage and creative sector, supports educational cooperation between the two countries, and works to strengthen people-to-people ties. In this regard, the Embassy engages with Maltese and Saudi institutions, as well as with the European network of national cultural institutes active in the Kingdom.
The Embassy also provides consular services to Maltese nationals residing in or travelling through Saudi Arabia, offering assistance and protection where needed. It additionally processes visa applications from Saudi nationals and third country nationals legally residing in in the Kingdom wishing to travel to Malta.
