In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Malta’s independence, the Embassy of the Republic of Malta in Israel hosted a luncheon for the Maltese Community in the Holy Land on September 19, 2024, at the Pontifical Institute Notre Dame of Jerusalem Centre. The event began with a thanksgiving mass, officiated by Fr Josef Mario Briffa SJ, at the Institute’s Chapel.

During her address, Ambassador Attard-Pirotta highlighted the significance of such gatherings in nurturing a strong sense of community among Maltese people abroad. She also highlighted Malta’s active role in international affairs, particularly its tenure in the United Nations Security Council between 2023 and 2024 and its role as Chair-In-Office of the OSCE in 2024. The Ambassador also referred to the current challenges faced by those living in the holy land in the aftermath of the October 7th attacks were over 1200 Israelis lost their life at the hands of the terrorist organisation Hamas, while underscoring Malta’s commitment to peace and security in the region.

In her address, the Ambassador reflected on our country’s progress across various fields—education, technology, healthcare, and infrastructure. She also acknowledged the courage and foresight of our forefathers, who took that bold step toward independence, while underscoring that Malta’s journey ahead will undoubtedly bring new challenges and opportunities. The gathering also recognised the efforts of individuals and organisations within the Maltese Community to promote Maltese values and customs in the Holy Land. The pre-luncheon festivities concluded with a rendition of the Maltese National Anthem.

The event also featured a National Day message from the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, Dr Ian Borg.

The Embassy extends its sincere gratitude to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of this event. Such occasions are vital in strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Malta and Israel.
