Permanent Mission of Malta to the UN New York

Membership of the United Nations has been a pillar of Malta’s Foreign Policy since it joined the Organization on 1st December 1964. Over the years Malta has sought to contribute through the United Nations to a more peaceful, safe, and just world through initiatives that protect the environment and promote human rights such as those on the Law of the Sea, the Elderly and the Protection of the Climate and more recently, strong partnership with Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Women and Girls in Science, International Day of Women in Diplomacy.

The Permanent Mission works within the United Nations to advance Malta’s interests and uphold its values through bilateral, and multilateral relations with UN Members. Together with other Member States Malta seeks to address challenges of the 21st Century. In so doing, we strive to promote peace, justice, and prosperity for all by building a stronger United Nations whose actions will succeed in improving the lives of present as well as future generations.

In January 2023, the Permanent Mission began a two-year term (concluding in December 2024) as an elected member of the United Nations Security Council, where it has represented Malta in promoting security, sustainability, and solidarity at the highest levels of the world stage. This has included playing a central role on agenda topics such as ‘Climate Security’, ‘Children and Armed Conflict’, ‘Women, Peace, & Security’ and peacebuilding and humanitarian efforts in regions around the world.
