On 17 September, Consul General Mr Ivan Vassallo and Maltese author Mr Matthew Schembri participated in a Literary Café event at the Goethe-Institut in Rabat, organised with the support of the European Union and the Goethe-Institut. The event formed part of the wider programme of events linked to Rabat’s designation as World Book Capital 2026 and part of the Consulate’s own programme of events for Malta Day 2026.

The gathering provided the audience with a valuable opportunity to discover and engage with Mr Schembri’s literary and artistic work particularly his fantasy novels “Ta’ taħt fuq” and “Stessi”. During a lively exchange of perspectives and questions, attendees were able to engage directly with the author and reflect on the relevance of literature as a means of cultural expression and dialogue.

The event also offered an opportunity to examine the broader cultural, historical and linguistic context that informs Mr Schembri’s creative practice. Discussions highlighted the influences that have contributed to the development of his distinctive artistic voice, as well as the ways in which literature can serve as a bridge between different cultures and communities. The interactive format encouraged meaningful participation from the audience, fostering an atmosphere of openness, curiosity and mutual exchange that enriched the overall experience for all those present.

The conversation focused in particular on the origins of the Maltese language, tracing its historical development and examining its evolution over the centuries. Attention was also given to the language’s development to a written and literary language, the relationship with other languages and cultures of the Mediterranean region, highlighting the ways in which Maltese has coexisted with, adapted to and been enriched by diverse linguistic influences while maintaining its distinct identity.

In addition, the discussion explored Mr Schembri’s wider body of work, which brings together visual art and poetry in innovative and thought-provoking ways, offering audiences insight into his multidisciplinary approach to creativity and the connections between text and image that run through his practice. The event stood as a fitting contribution to Rabat’s year as World Book Capital 2026 and to the Consulate’s Malta Day programme, reaffirming the role of literature and culture in bringing communities together.
