Maltese and Algerian Musicians Unite in a Unique Cross-Cultural Jam Session and Concert

08/10/2025

Algiers, Algeria — A powerful musical exchange took place in Algiers on 22 and 23 September, as Maltese and Algerian artists came together in a vibrant celebration of cultural dialogue and musical diversity. The initiative, sponsored by the Cultural Diplomacy Fund of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, brought together talented musicians from both countries for a collaborative jam session at the historic Dar Abdel Latif, followed by a public concert at the Spanish Cultural Institute.

Representing Malta were Benji Cachia, multi-instrumentalist and percussionist, Francesco Sultana, flutist and traditional instrument maker, and Adel Montanaro, vocalist.  Over two days, the trio collaborated with a dynamic lineup of Algerian musicians, each contributing a unique sound and perspective to the project.

The first encounter at Dar Abdel Latif—a stunning Moorish villa that houses the Agence Algérienne pour le Rayonnement Culturel (AARC)—offered an intimate setting for artistic exchange. Musicians shared rhythms, techniques, and traditions, engaging in spontaneous collaboration and creative improvisation. Among the Algerian participants were Husseyn Daggar, an established singer and guitarist who introduced the audience to Touareg blues from southern Algeria, and Izlan Band, known for their modern interpretations of Chaoui music from the Aurès region. Izlan Band is renowned for blending traditional instruments such as the bendir with modern sounds like the guitar, creating an innovative dialogue between heritage and contemporary expression.

On 23 September, the collaboration culminated in a live concert at the Spanish Cultural Institute in Algiers, where audiences were treated to a dynamic fusion of Mediterranean and North African sounds. Joining the Maltese musicians on stage were Hacene Zemrani on saxophone, Imad Haddad on violin, and Abdel Hakim, a multi-percussionist and traditional instrument maker, whose powerful improvisations combined Maghrebi and West African rhythms. Together, the ensemble delivered a captivating performance of original pieces and improvised sets that reflected the spirit of cross-cultural exchange.

This initiative underscored the role of music as a universal language, bridging geographical and cultural divides through creativity and shared passion. It also highlighted the importance of artistic collaboration in promoting mutual understanding and cultural enrichment between Mediterranean nations.

The event was warmly received by both participants and audiences, paving the way for future collaborations and deeper cultural ties between Malta and Algeria.
