Malta elected as Rapporteur of the UN General Assembly Second Committee (Economic and Financial)

Ms. Francesca Cassar, Economic and Development Coordinator at the Permanent Mission of Malta to the United Nations, has been elected by acclamation by the UN General Assembly to serve as Rapporteur of the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) for the upcoming 77th Session of the UN General Assembly.

Ms. Cassar’s nomination was presented and endorsed by the Western European and Others Group in the months prior to the election and as Rapporteur of the Second Committee, will oversee the preparation and presentation of the final report of the Committee to the UN General Assembly.

Ms. Cassar will form part of the Bureau of the Committee led by Chair H.E. Lachezara Stoeva, Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the UN.

The Second Committee of the UN General Assembly deals with issues relating to development and economic growth and meets every year in early October and completes its main work by December. The work of the Second Committee is crucial to the mandate of the United Nations as it steers its work on the central role of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. By dealing with the eradication of poverty, financing for development, climate change, globalization, food security and global partnerships, the Second Committee is continuously engaged with issues of relevant and common global concerns

Last year, H.E. Vanessa Frazier, Permanent Representative of Malta to the UN, had served as Chair of the same Committee for the 76th Session, successfully leading all 193 Member States of the UN to adopt 37 resolutions related to Sustainable Development. Ms. Cassar had assisted H.E. Frazier during her tenure as Chair.Malta remains a strong supporter of sustainable development and multilateralism, with the UN at its core.
